An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in all cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Defence Context
This announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government activities, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
